Doormat with border: ready to go, in three sizes, printed with your design

Not everyone wants to start with a tape measure. Sometimes you just want a good looking mat at the door, with your own photo, your logo or your family name on it, without doing sums and without weighing up shapes and surface areas. That is what this doormat with border is made for: three fixed sizes, a fixed price, a crisp black border all the way round and your design in full colour inside it.

The top layer is polyester and it is printed using sublimation printing, where the ink sinks into the fibre instead of sitting on top of it. That gives you a hard-wearing image that stays good looking for a long time, including on the spot where everyone puts their feet. The backing is nitrile rubber with an anti-slip finish, and at a total thickness of just 1.5 mm the mat lies perfectly flat on your floor. No raised edges, nothing to trip over, and doors swing freely over it.

Three sizes, three prices, nothing else to work out

You choose from three sizes. The price is fixed and does not depend on the number of colours or on how complex your design is.

  • 60 x 40 cm for €40: the classic doormat, exactly right for one standard front door or an interior door
  • 75 x 50 cm for €50: a little roomier, so you step onto it with both feet at once instead of straight over it
  • 90 x 60 cm for €60: the size for a wide entrance, a double door or a shop doorway

Torn between two sizes? Go for the larger one. A mat that is narrower than the doorway invites people to step half beside it, and then it only does half its job. Measure the width of your door, add a few centimetres on either side, and you will know straight away which size fits.

The 2 cm black border and what it does to your design

This mat comes with a 2 cm wide black border all the way round as standard. It is part of the product and cannot be left off, not even for a surcharge. Aesthetically that works in your favour: the border frames your image, gives the whole thing a finished look and hides the dirt that naturally gathers around the outside first.

In practical terms you do need to allow for it, because the border eats into the visible print area. Every side loses 2 cm, so 4 cm comes off both dimensions. That works out as:

  • 60 x 40 cm gives a print area of 56 x 36 cm
  • 75 x 50 cm gives a print area of 71 x 46 cm
  • 90 x 60 cm gives a print area of 86 x 56 cm

Bear that in mind as you design. Do not push a house number, a wordmark or a face right into the far corner, give it a little air on every side. A background that simply runs on to the edge is fine, because it is cut off neatly at the border. A line of text running right up to the border looks cramped.

Design advice: what works well on this top layer

The polyester top layer has a fine structure and you can see that in the result. On this material, sublimation printing holds noticeably more detail than a print on a thick velour or a coarse outdoor mat, so a photo comes out surprisingly well here. It is still a textile mat rather than a photographic print, though, so here are a few guidelines that make the difference:

  • Supply your file at full size, or in high resolution. Blowing up an image from a website to 86 cm wide gives you visible grain.
  • Keep text solid. A bold sans-serif letter stays legible, a thin decorative letter with hairline flourishes much less so.
  • Think about the viewing direction. A mat is almost always looked at from one side, namely from the door. So set your text the way it will be read, not mirrored and not on its side.
  • Black in your design runs into the border. A dark background blends visually with the black surround, which can look great, but be aware that your mat will then read as larger and calmer.

Why 1.5 mm makes the difference

The thickness of a mat decides whether you get on with it more often than you would think. At 1.5 mm this mat sits at the thin end of the spectrum, and that has three consequences. First, you can lay it under almost any door, including an inward opening front door with only a couple of millimetres of clearance. Second, the transition from floor to mat is barely noticeable, which is welcome in places where people come in with a walking frame, a pushchair or a full bag of shopping. Third, thanks to the nitrile rubber backing it lies flat and quiet on tiles, laminate, poured floors or concrete.

We will be honest about the flip side: a thin mat takes up less dirt and moisture than a thick entrance mat. So expect this doormat to give you a decorative, personal entrance with anti-slip, not a mat that holds litres of water after a rainy day. For that, take a look at the outdoor doormat or the custom indoor doormat.

Two things to know beforehand

This mat is not fire retardant. That is what the manufacturer’s specifications say and we would rather tell you now than afterwards. In a home, an office without special requirements or on a trade show stand that rarely matters, but in spaces where a fire classification requirement applies, think of escape routes, care homes, schools and many public buildings, this mat is not the right choice. There you want the custom indoor doormat, which is allowed thanks to fire classification C-s1, d0 and the accompanying certificate.

The second point is the size. There is no in between size and no alternative shape. If you need a runner, a semicircular mat, a mat 120 cm wide or a contour around a logo, this is not the product for you. That is exactly what the two made to measure versions are for, where you fill in the millimetres yourself.

Which of the three mats do you need?

We make three different mats and each of them solves a different problem. At a glance:

Rule of thumb: if your spot fits a standard size and what you mainly want is a good looking personal image for little money, this is your mat. If it really has to catch dirt and moisture, or it does not fit a standard size, you will be happier with a made to measure mat.

A personalised doormat for the home, for your business or for a single day

The same product, three completely different uses. What they share is the reason people order a personalised doormat: the mat at the door is the first thing anyone sees, and you get to fill in that moment however you like.

Doormat with logo for businesses and events

A doormat with logo puts your brand literally on the threshold. At the entrance to a salon, a practice, a showroom or an office that works every day, and at a trade show or an event it works in one go: visitors walk over it, look down and see your name. Because the price is fixed and the delivery time is 7 working days, this is also a practical product to order in small runs, one mat per location or one per stand for example. Keep the image simple, because a logo in two or three colours on a calm background reads far better from above than a design filled edge to edge. Design for the print area inside the border, so 56 x 36 cm, 71 x 46 cm or 86 x 56 cm, and your logo will have room to breathe.

Doormat with name or your own photo for the home

At home it gets more personal. A doormat with name for the family, the house number large and clear, a silhouette of the dog or simply a graphic pattern that suits your hallway: all of it is possible. A doormat with your own photo works especially well with an image you took yourself and that means something, think of the place where you spent a holiday or the view you miss. Thanks to the slim profile the mat is equally at home indoors by an interior door, at the bedroom door or under the coat rack.

As a gift this mat is a sure thing, precisely because there is nothing to measure. You pick a size, upload a photo and that is that. For a house move, a wedding or a birthday, within 7 working days there is something at the door that nobody else has.

How to get your doormat printed

Choose your size above, upload your own image or select a design from the collection and place your order. We set your file on the chosen print area, check whether the resolution and the level of detail can carry the size, and then get to work on your printed doormat. Within 7 working days your mat will be at your door. Want to know more about delivery? Read all about shipping and delivery times. Unsure about your file or about the size? Frequently asked questions about the doormat with border

Can I leave the black border off or have it in another colour?

No. The 2 cm black border is a fixed part of this product and is always there. It cannot be left off and it cannot be ordered in another colour. If you want a mat where your design runs all the way to the outside edge, with no surround, choose one of the made to measure mats. Both the custom indoor doormat and the outdoor doormat are cut-resistant and therefore need no border at all.

How much of my design stays visible?

Each dimension loses 4 cm, that is 2 cm on both sides. On 60 x 40 cm that leaves 56 x 36 cm for your image, on 75 x 50 cm it is 71 x 46 cm and on 90 x 60 cm it is 86 x 56 cm. Feel free to let backgrounds run on, they are cut off neatly at the border. Keep important elements such as a name, a house number or a logo inside that print area, with a bit of space around them. We check this on every order and will warn you if something runs into the border.

Which size do I choose for my front door?

Measure the width of your doorway and choose a mat that is roughly as wide or a little wider. With a standard interior door or a narrow front door of around 80 cm, 60 x 40 cm sits well if you centre it, while 75 x 50 cm covers the whole opening. For a wide front door, a double door or a shop doorway, go for 90 x 60 cm. Also take a quick look at the clearance under your door, although at 1.5 mm thick that is rarely a problem.

Can I order a different size or another shape?

Not with this product. There are three sizes and one shape, and that is exactly why this mat is simpler and cheaper than our other mats. If you do need a different size, a runner down a corridor, a mat that fits a recessed mat well or a round shape for example, then order the custom indoor doormat. There you enter the dimensions yourself and choose the shape, contour cutting included.

Will the mat stay put on a smooth floor?

Yes. The backing is nitrile rubber with an anti-slip finish, which grips on tiles, laminate, poured floors, vinyl and concrete. Combined with the slim 1.5 mm thickness it also means there is no edge sticking up for your shoe to catch on. Do lay the mat on a clean, flat surface. Sand or grit underneath reduces the grip, and that goes for any mat.

Is this doormat fire retardant?

No. The manufacturer’s specifications state unambiguously that this mat is not fire retardant, so there is no fire certificate either. For homes and most business premises that makes no difference. If a fire classification requirement does apply at your location, in an escape route, a care home, a school or another public building for example, choose the custom indoor doormat, which is classified as C-s1, d0 and comes with a fire certificate.

Can this doormat be used outside?

We offer it as an entrance mat at the door and we make no claim about prolonged exposure to rain, frost and UV light, because we have no conclusive specification for that. We would rather promise nothing than something we cannot back up. If you are specifically looking for a mat that lies outside the door and has to stand up to the weather, choose the outdoor doormat. That one is built for it, with a coarse top layer, a 15 mm build and good lightfastness.

How do I keep the mat clean?

The mat is easy to clean and day to day maintenance amounts to very little: loose dirt you remove dry, and the smooth polyester top layer gives dust and sand little to hold on to. We deliberately do not give a specific washing instruction, because we have no confirmed specification for it and we do not want to give you advice that could damage your mat. Got a specific case, a stubborn stain for example? Get in touch and we will find out for you before you try anything.

Which file should I supply for the best quality?

Supply your image as large as you can, ideally at the full size of the print area. A photo straight off your phone is usually more than enough for 56 x 36 cm, whereas a small logo from a website goes visibly grainy at 86 x 56 cm. If a small file is all you have, send it in anyway and we will judge whether it can carry the size you have chosen.

How quickly will I have my doormat?

The delivery time is 7 working days. Because the size is fixed and there is no made to measure calculation involved, your order goes into production quickly. Everything about shipping is at shipping and delivery times. If you order several mats with different designs, for several locations or as gifts for several people for example, the same delivery time applies.
