DW Original - Most popular kitchen backsplash material
DW Original is our most popular material for kitchen backsplashes. A 3 mm wall panel that you mount straight over your existing wall or tiles. Lightweight, heat resistant for induction hobs and available in hundreds of designs.
Material properties
Our material has a thickness of 3mm and consists of three layers. The outer layers are aluminium and the inner core is hard plastic. The material weighs only 4.3kg/m². Installing a backsplash is therefore a much easier job than tiling.
PLEASE NOTE: Do you have a gas stove? Then DW Original is not suitable unless the stove is at least 10cm from the backsplash! Choose Solid Aluminium - DW Solid or DW Glass instead.
Our kitchen backsplashes are lightweight and therefore easy to install. The print goes directly on the aluminium and looks fantastic. We print directly onto the panel and apply a protective coating on top.
Is DW Original a plastic backsplash?
Partly, and the difference is worth knowing. The core is hard plastic, the outer layers are aluminium. If you are looking for a plastic kitchen backsplash, this is probably what you have in mind: a wall panel that is lighter and cheaper than glass, and that saves you the tiling.
What that aluminium outer layer adds compared to a panel made entirely of plastic:
- Rigidity. A panel made entirely of plastic bows on a long wall. The aluminium layers keep the panel flat, even in a wide kitchen.
- Print. We print directly onto the aluminium and apply a protective coating on top. That gives a sharper image than printing on plastic.
Plastic, aluminium or glass: which do you choose?
We make three materials, and the difference comes down mostly to heat and budget.
- DW Original, aluminium composite, from around 100 euros. The most chosen option. Suitable with induction and ceramic cooking, light enough to hang yourself, and it glues over existing tiles
- DW Solid, solid aluminium, from around 150 euros. For behind a gas hob, next to an air fryer that vents backwards, or when you want the most scratch resistance
- DW Glass, tempered glass, from around 200 euros. The most depth in the image and the highest heat resistance, but heavier and dearer
If you cook on induction, DW Original is the right choice in almost every case. If a gas hob or an appliance that blows heat at the wall gives you pause, go one step up.
Buying a made to measure plastic kitchen backsplash
Anyone searching for a made to measure plastic kitchen backsplash usually wants to know just two things: will it fit exactly, and what does it cost. Every panel is cut to your measurements, including the cut-outs for sockets, taps and an extractor hood if you have one. You enter width and height, choose a design or upload your own image, and see the price straight away. There is no standard size you have to work around.
If you have an IKEA kitchen, that is the biggest practical advantage. IKEA panels come in fixed widths of 119.6 cm, which leaves you with visible seams on a longer wall. A made to measure panel runs in one piece across your whole worktop.

Straight over existing tiles
In most kitchens the old tiling does not have to come off. If the tiles are flat and well bonded, you glue the panel straight over them with adhesive. That saves demolition, dust and a day of work. With heavy relief or loose tiles, some preparation is needed.
Because the panel is 3 mm thick, the extra build-up is barely noticeable against your worktop. If you are unsure about your own situation, send a photograph through contact and we will take a look with you.
Suitable for induction (heat)
Our kitchen panels are water and heat resistant for use with an induction hob. This also protects your backsplash against water splashes. Please be careful with household appliances that blow excessive heat backwards for prolonged periods such as an air fryer. The Original panel is sensitive to this and may warp. Want to avoid this? Choose our DW Solid variant.

Glossy lacquer
The glossy lacquer reflects much more than the matte lacquer. From a distance it gives a glass-like appearance. Especially with DW Solid, it looks even more like glass.
